Perfect execution can be found at Bistro du Midi

I was called on to host a birthday party and the only request of the birthday girl was a place with a good chocolate dessert. After consulting with her brother, we settled on Bistro du Midi, in part because of the chocolate soufflé and in part because both of us like the food there. Bistro du Midi is perfectly situated on the edge of Boston Public Garden, providing a charming view out the second floor dining room window. The room is gently lit and decorated in a casual, yet smart, fashion. The service is comfortable but professional, friendly but not familiar. Gas LampThe wine list at Bistro du Midi is extensive. There are plenty of good values, but also the opportunity to pay more than $1,000 for a bottle if you need to. We enjoyed a nicely balanced house cocktail with gin, mint, and ginger before opening a bottle of Turley Old Vine Zinfandel 2010. We began by sharing the charcuterie selection that was lightly garnished with cornichons, quartered olives and country bread. None of the meats were particularly exciting but all were fresh and flavorful. The variety was good as well with both mild and spicy selections. It could be improved on with the addition of a pâté or an exotic meat, but nothing would stop me from ordering it again.CharcuterieNext I tried the seared foie gras with poached pear in a port wine sauce. It was generous portion, well prepared with a thin crust and creamy interior. The pears were tremendous, soft and flavorful. It was served with two large pieces of bread and I wonder if anyone ever eats all of that bread or if like me they just use a bit or two like I did to soak up the rest of the delicious sauce. I also stole from the plate next to me some of the pork belly. It was served with tender, earthy lentils. The belly itself had a strong flavor but was slightly over salted. If you are choosing between the two get the foie gras.Foie GrasFor my main course I had the pork chop. I rarely order a pork chop, but was enticed by the haricot verts. This turned out to be the dish of the night. I often go to a restaurant only to think that the meat is no better prepared than how I make it at home, but I don’t think in my life I will ever make a pork chop like this. Served on the bone the flavor was intense and the meat was tender and amazingly juicy.  I often find pork chops tough on stringy even when not overcooked.  I think the accompaniments were good, but to be honest I was lost in the meat. I have had very good pork tenderloin, but never have I had a pork chop this good. This is a dish worth going back for over and over again. Pork ChopAt this point I was full and happy, but that didn’t stop me from accepting my share of the chocolate soufflé. The soufflé is on the runny side, which I like. But if you want a traditional, eggy soufflé this might not be for you. If you want it even runnier, which I do, you can pour a little cream into the center from the miniature pitcher that comes with it. While there might be room for discussion about the consistency, the only thing that can be said for the flavor is that it is intensely chocolaty. This pure chocolate dessert was exactly what the birthday girl was hoping for. SouffleThis was not my first trip to Bistro du Midi and not even my best experience there, but Bistro du Midi has never let me down. Every time I go I have something that amazes. The setting is lovely and the service is always charming. It is not the most creative food in Boston, nor is it the most elegant, but the execution is second to none. I’m not quite ready to declare Bistro du Midi my favorite restaurant in Boston, but I know it’s in my top five, maybe even my top three.
