Letherbee Vernal 2017
Chicago, IL – USA
For my first gin of the week selection, I wanted to chose something unique. The bad news is this is so unique that you probably aren’t going to be able to find it. You might still have a chance in liquor stores in and around Chicago, but not for much longer as they have already released their next limited edition batch. The good news is if you can find it, you will be rewarded with a truly special gin.
The Vernal 2017 is an Asian inspired gin with a strong flavor of lemongrass. It has a slight green tint to it and comes in a bright orange bottle with a plastic white cap that tops most of Letherbee’s products. It smells of citrus and pepper with a slight hint of sweet earthiness. I tried it neat, but thought it a little to strong for sipping. Mixed with tonic, at 2 parts tonic to one part gin, it was perfect. This New Western style gin focuses on lemongrass, ginger and citrus which are all strong enough to stand up to the tonic. The juniper is exceedingly light and so this gin might appeal to the non-gin drinker.
Overall, I really like the Vernal 2017. It’s my second favorite new gin of 2017. I hope you come back for future posts to see what my favorite new gin of the year was. I promise it won’t be like anything you have ever had.

Distillers notes: “The tangy, rejuvenating flavors of Southeast Asia inspire Letherbee’s 2017 Vernal Gin. Fistfuls of freshly snapped lemongrass stalk lend the liquid a spritely green hue, and fill the flavor with a minty, citric brightness. Holy basil and raw ginger nimbly coast along each clean sip, then cascade into the mustardy galangal mid-palate. The finish plants a goodbye kiss of creamy almond, savory long pepper, and crisp lemon peel.”
